Patching ESXi 5.5 for Heartbleed without installing Update 1

Patching with VMware Update Manager

There are a number of methods for patching ESXi hosts, and the most commonly used is VMware Update Manager (VUM). VUM will present a pair of Dynamic Baselines which will be automatically updated when patches are available. The danger in this case is that VUM may show you both the Pre-Update 1 patch, as well as the Post-Update 1 patch. If you are not careful as to which patches you apply, you might accidentally end up patching your host to Post-Update 1.
Here are the patches which were released on April 19th, as seen in VUM. The Update 1 patch is highlighted in red, while the Pre-Update 1 patch is marked in green.

Note: VMware also released two other ESXi 5.5 patches on April 19th, as part of Patch Release but these are not related to the Heartbleed vulnerability in any fashion. (ESXi550-201404402-BG, and ESXi550-201404403-BG).

Creating a Fixed Baseline

Patching a host using ESXi550-201404420-SG (Pre-Update 1), while avoiding ESXi550-201404401-SG (Post-Update 1) requires the use of a Fixed Baseline in Update Manager.
  1. Start in the Update Manager Admin view.
  2. Select the Baselines and Groups tab.
  3. Click Create… in the Baselines column.

  4. Give the new Baseline a descriptive Name (and optionally a Description).

  5. Click Next.
  6. For Baseline type, select Fixed.

  7. Use the Search feature to find the only Patch we want to apply. You will need to select the Patch ID option from the dropdown menu to ensure the search scans for the appropriate column.

  8. Enter the Patch ID into the search field: ESXi550-201404420-SG and click Enter to search.
  9. Select the Patch which shows up in the filtered list, and click the Down Arrow to move it into the selected Baselines.

  10. Click Next and confirm that the Patch ESXi550-201404420-SG is the only one selected.

  11. Click Finish.
The Baseline is now created and available for use.

Remediating a Host using the Fixed Baseline

Once the Fixed Baseline has been created, we can use it to Scan and Remediate an ESXi host.
  1. Select the host you wish to patch, and place it into Maintenance Mode.
  2. Click the Update Manager tab.
  3. Make sure that there are no Dynamic Baselines attached to the host you wish to patch. Detach any baselines which are currently attached:
    Critical Host Patches (Predefined)
    Non-Critical Host Patches (Predefined)
    Any other Custom Baselines which you have created
  4. Click the Attach link.

  5. Select the newly created Baseline and click Attach.

  6. Click the Scan link and make sure Patches and Extensions is selected. Click Scan again.

  7. When you are ready to patch the host, select Remediate.
  8. Complete the Remediation wizard.
Once the host is patched, it will reboot automatically.

Horizon View Configuration Tool

The Horizon View Configuration Tool automates Horizon View 5.2 installation and deployment. It removes the complexities and manual steps required for setting up a basic Horizon View deployment.
The vCT ships as a virtual appliance with all the required VMware components to set up your Horizon View environment. You provide the Windows Server 2008 R2 ISO, an ESX host, a few parameters, and your licenses, and then the tool will provision your environment dynamically and automatically.
Using the vCT web UI, you will be guided through required fields to customize your deployment.

The vCT deploys the following components:
  • Virtual machine with Active Directory Domain Controller configured (or you may integrate with the existing DC in your environment)
  • Virtual machine with Horizon View installed
  • Virtual machine with Horizon View Composer installed
  • vCenter Server Appliance virtual machine deployed and configured
For each of these Windows-based components, the tool dynamically deploys a virtual machine, installs Windows Server 2008 R2, and then installs and configures the Horizon View components.
Once the deployment is complete, you will be able to navigate directly to your Horizon View administrative console, and your environment will be ready for VDI.

Unable to increase the number of ports on a virtual switch in ESXi 5.5

By design, the number of ports on a standard virtual switch in  ESXi 5.5 cannot be modified. To ensure efficient use of resources on hosts running ESXi 5.5, the ports of virtual switches are dynamically scaled up and down. A switch on such a host can expand up to the maximum number of ports supported on the host. The port limit is determined based on the maximum number of virtual machines that the host can handle. It uses only the elastic option and the ports are dynamically increased or reduced according to need. By functionality, it is similar to the auto-expand feature available in dvSwitch starting with vSphere 5.0.
However, the vSphere Client still shows 120 ports by default and allows you to modify, though the default is set to 1536 at the back-end and does not change.

The vSphere Web Client correctly shows the updated value for the number of ports as elastic.

Running the esxcli network vswitch standard list command from the shell prompt shows Num Ports as 1536.

Exam Details VCP (VMware Certified Professional)

Exam Details 5.0/5.1


  • Number of Questions: 85 questions, with a pre-exam survey of 8 questions
  • Type(s) of questions: multiple choice; some questions will require only one selection while others may require two or more selections. Questions clearly state the number of required selections.
  • Passing Score: 300, on a scaled score of 100 to 500
  • Time Limit: 90 minutes for the exam plus an additional 15 minutes for the pre-exam survey. Candidates testing in countries where English is not the primary spoken language will have an additional 30 minutes for the exam (120 minutes total)

  • Number of Questions
The VCP5-DCV Exam consists of 135 questions and a short pre-exam survey consisting of 8 questions.

  • Passing Score
The passing score for this exam is 300, using a scaled scoring method. The scale is from 100-500. Scaled scores are calculated using a mathematical formula that considers a variety of factors, including the number and type of exam questions included in a specific version of the exam. Because this combination may vary in different versions of the same examination, scaled scores provide a fair score for each individual based on the version of the exam taken.

  • Time Limit
The time limit for the exam is 120 minutes, with an additional 15 minutes to complete the survey questions and agreements. Candidates who take the VCP5-DCV Exam in a country where English is not a primary language will have an additional 30 minutes added to the exam time. This time extension is automatic, no additional action is required from the candidate. For the purposes of this exam, countries where English is considered one of the primary languages include Australia, Belize, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
